Biography

Stine Neerup a PhD candidate from Copenhagen University, Denmark joined the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements in 2008. Stine is attached to the centre in the academic years 2008-10 doing research on comparative immigration policy issues in Australia, Denmark and the US.

Stine holds an MA in History and Political Science from Copenhagen University. In late 2007 Stine accepted a full-time PhD Fellowship at the Centre for the Study of Equality and Multiculturalism at Copenhagen University. Throughout the three years, Stine will conduct research into the built-in discrimination of migrant selection and recruitment in past and current migration policymaking within Denmark, Australia and the US, while simultaneously exploring the dilemmas pertaining to migrant status and the granting of rights beyond the nation-state, assessing the practical and ethical issues arising from the promotion of circular migration.

Prior to undertaking her PhD Fellowship, Stine co-authored a research report on voluntary social work in Denmark, commissioned by the Danish Ministry of Social Welfare, which among other things sought to identify the extend of ethnic minorities' engagement in voluntary social work. Based at the Danish Institute of International Studies (DIIS), Copenhagen, in 2006, Stine completed an in-depth analysis of the problematic issues pertaining to the development of a common migration policy within the European Union.

Undertaking studies at Melbourne University in 2001, Stine conducted interviews with Danish immigrants, and incorporated the findings into a survey of Danish immigration to Melbourne post-WWIII. In the survey she focused on migrant status, political and cultural organization as well as language maintenance within the Danish community. In 2002 she travelled to Seattle, the US, in order to complete a similar study of Danish immigration to the Pacific Northwest, while based at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle. The findings have been incorporated into research projects on language maintenance and immigrant organisation in receiving countries.

Thus, Stine's research is based on a thorough theoretical grounding in migration studies, past and present, as well as a strong knowledge and understanding of current migration issues, policymaking and legislation in Denmark, Australia, and the US as well as within the European Union.
